The energy centre incorporates energy efficient HVAC systems which operate in mixed mode to utilise ambient air economy cycles whenever possible.

Refurbishment of the reference library required that the existing air conditioning and ventilation be altered to suit the new layout. This was achieved without compromising the original design concept.

Working closely with Paramount Plans, Optimal has been involved in the design and documentation of extensive HVAC services for the new clinic building. This is (July 2013) an ongoing project; Phase I is complete with construction of Phase II due to start shortly.

The clinic complex includes: operating theatres and associated preparation and treatment areas; consulting rooms; administrative offices; animal holding rooms. All animal holding rooms are ventilated using tempered outdoor air in summer, while air conditioning is provided to surgical and treatment areas.

Cooling of ventilation air is achieved in an energy efficient manner using an indirect evaporative cooling process; night time setback and efficient VRF air conditioning help to minimise energy use.

Working in conjunction with Morrell Architects, documentation was prepared for HVAC services to two new buildings, including: central dust extraction system serving several workshops; air conditioning to computer rooms and teaching spaces; a hybrid, mixed mode system serving the new Library administration building.

The hybrid system serving the library incorporates several energy-saving features, including:

  • 100% outdoor air ventilation at all times
  • Active mass cooling and heating of concrete floor slabs
  • Mixed mode ventilation including manually-operable louvers to all areas
  • Night flush cooling of building structure during summer

St Pius X Theatre & Commercial Kitchen Ventilation

During the construction phase of this project Optimal was approached to take over design of HVAC services of the TTC spaces. This required an innovative approach in order to provide all required services within a small, fixed budget.

Air conditioning and ventilation was required for the 600 seat studio theatre, now known as ‘The Factory’. Tempered outdoor air is supplied to the tiered seating area using proprietary, off-the-shelf package equipment. Air is supplied from a pressurised plenum under the seating via proprietary grilles in a displacement configuration.

Working with a local architectural practice, Optimal assisted with design and documentation of alterations and additions to existing HVAC services, including the addition of supplementary systems.

This project required that the generators be kept on-line throughout, which involved close cooperation with the station staff at all times. The practice maintained its involvement with the installation until commissioning and handover.
